Lowe Family Papers 1803-1964 1850-1875

The Lowe Collection consists of the papers and letters of John W. Lowe, Xenia lawyer and Mexican War officer; his son Thomas O. Lowe, Dayton lawyer, judge, and later clergyman; and other Lowe family members. The collection includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks and notebooks, legal documents, photographs, and mementos. The majority of the materials were created or collected by Thomas O. Lowe, the most significant of which relate to Lowe's involvement with the Copperhead Movement in Dayton, Ohio. Other notable materials in this collection include John W. Lowe's Mexican War correspondence.

John W. Lowe John W. Lowe was born in 1809 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, a son of James Baronhuysen Lowe and Catherine Kennon. John's mother died about 1813, and his father died in 1821 in New York. At that point, 12-year-old John became the primary breadwinner for his stepmother and siblings. His childhood was marked by trauma and hardship.
